N.D. (NewsDakota.com) The opening round of the District 2 Girls Basketball Tournament just about followed the rules of the rankings. The days only upset came in the opening game where #5 Fargo Oak Grove defeated Richland. The rest of the games went the way of the seeding.
#5 Oak Grove 55 vs #4 Richland 40
The Grovers picked up the first upset of the tournament on the back of Abby Ringdahl who tallied a team high 15 points. Celsey Knudson posted 10 points in the Grovers win.
The Colts were led on the score sheet by Kirsten Bokinskie who scored 15 points, dished out 4 assists, and grabbed six rebounds.
The loss means Richland will have Saturday off and will play in Mondays regional qualifier. Oak Grove will play the state’s second ranked Kindred Vikings tomorrow afternoon around 5:00pm.
#2 Maple Valley 59 #7 Northern Cass 21
In the night second game, Maple Valley got off to a quick start outscoring the Jaguars 20-2 in the opening quarter. Maple Valley controlled the entire game shooting 41 percent from the field and hitting 72 percent of their free-throws. Northern Cass struggled to make shot finishing just 23 percent from the field.
For the Raiders, Rylee Nudell posted a game high 22 points, seven rebounds, and seven steals. Megan Kasowski dominated under the basket posting 13 points and grabbing 10 rebounds for the double-double.
Northern Cass was led in scoring by Kerissa McCarthy who totaled 7 points in the loss.
Maple Valley will play Central Cass on Saturday for the chance to go to the District 2 championship around 7:30pm. You can hear the game on Q101.
#3 Central Cass 44 vs #6 Enderlin 32
In the night’s final game, Central Cass received a bit of a surprise. After defeating Enderlin just a little over a week ago by a score of 24 points, the Eagles came out with a 6-2 run to start the game. After a quick time out from Squirrels coach Todd Wegner, Central Cass would respond with a 11-0 run of their own. The Eagles continued to fight back with help from sophomore Jacquelyn McCleary who tallied a team high 10 points.
After taking just a two point lead into the halftime break, the Squirrels would out score the Eagles in the third quarter 13-5, it proved to be one piece of straw to many for the Eagles to recover from.
Macie Romsdal of Central Cass led all scorers in the game with 18 points. Central Cass moves onto the Semifinals where they will play against Maple Valley. In the two teams last meeting the Raiders defeated the Squirrels by just four points.
