N.D. (NewsDakota.com) North Dakota Tax Commissioner Ryan Rauschenberger said state income tax refunds resumed last night. State tax refunds were suspended on February 5th while department resources were shifted to handle the increased volume in attempted fraudulent returns, and additional checks were put in place to catch fraudulent filings before they were processed.
“We appreciate the patience that taxpayers have shown while we work to safeguard their information and tax dollars,” stated Rauschenberger. “As the additional preventative measures are put in place, we ask taxpayers to continue to be patient waiting for their refunds.”
The additional preventative measures will likely result in slower refund processing time. Taxpayers may check their refunds at www.nd.gov/tax with the “Where’s My Refund?” tool. Refund information is updated daily.
If the Office of State Tax Commissioner has reason to believe a taxpayer has been a victim of identity theft through a fraudulent tax return, the taxpayer will be contacted immediately with a letter describing the fraudulent activity and recommended actions for the taxpayer. Taxpayers should follow the instructions on the letter as soon as they are able.
If the taxpayer uses TurboTax and has reason to believe they have been a victim of identity theft through a fraudulent tax return, they may call the TurboTax hotline: 800.944.8596. As of Friday evening, TurboTax has restored the ability of its software to e-file state tax returns.
North Dakota taxpayers can help prevent a fraudulent return being filed with their identity by filing their taxes as soon as they are able.
