CITY, N.D. (NewsDaktoa.com) The Valley City boys and girls basketball team’s both played tight games with Grand Forks Red River but in the end it was the Rough Riders who claimed the wins. In the boys game the Hi-Liners would force overtime but fall to Red River 78-67 in the extra period. In the girls game, the Rough Riders used quick ball movement and strong free-throw shooting to defeat the Hi-Liners 69-60.

Boys: Valley City 67 Grand Forks Red River 78 OT

Led by Jared Lentz’s 21 points the Hi-Liners would force the game into overtime against Grand Forks Red River. It was there that the Rough Riders would create the first real separation of the game. Red River’s Shayden Keplin scored six of his 28 points in the extra period helping the the visiting team to an 11 point win. 

In the post Vally’s Ian Schweitzer posted 16 points, while freshman Hunter Burchill was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line in the second half with 12 points. 

The two point loss drops Valley City to 4-13 in the Eastern Dakota Conference. Hi-Liners are now 4-12 overall. 

Girls: Valley City 60 Grand Forks Red River 69

In a foul filled game that saw both teams take nearly 80 free-throws, Red River found their way to victory with strong perimeter play. 

In the opening half of play, Grand Fork’s Lexi Robson hit four 3-pointers on her way to a game high 28 points. While the Hi-Liner kept the game close they could never close the gap that the Rider’s created in the opening half. 

In the post, Brenna Dieterle used her height to her advantage going over Rough Rider players for a team high 22 points. Clair Olson finished the game with 10 points, Reagan Ingstad knocked down three 3-pointers in the game to finish with 11 points. 

The two point loss drops the Hi-Liners to 5-12 in the conference. They are now 6-12 overall with three games left to play. 

The Hi-Liner girls are on the road this Thursday when they travel to Wahpeton for a 7:30pm start time with the Huskies. That game can be heard on 1490 KOVC. The boys team returns home on Wednesday for their final game with Wahpeton.
