CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) The Valley City State Vikings women tied up the top of the North Star Athletic Association standings with a 72-65 win over 11th ranked Jamestown. The Jimmie men played out a rerun of their January 21st win over the Vikings with an 87-64 win over Valley City at W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse.

Women: Valley City State 72 University of Jamestown 65

The Valley City State Vikings trailed by two with just two seconds remaining and the ball under their own basket. On the inbound, Sierra Even found Sadiqah Jihad on the right baseline. As time ticked away, the Minneapolis native drove into thee lane and threw up the game tying shot. She missed, but was given new life when Jamestowns Chelsey Frydenlund was called four the foul. With just .3 seconds on the clock Jihad stepped to the line and knocked down both shots tying the game and forcing overtime.

In the extra period of play Valley City’s  Georgia Williams knocked down four free throws and hit a three pointer securing the upset over the 11th ranked Jimmies.

Jihad led the vikings in the game with 19 points, five assist, and five rebounds.  Williams had eight points and was a perfect 6-for-6 at the free throw line. Off the Bench Lexi Lennon and Courtney  Dixon had 14 and 12 points respectively. 

The Jimmies were led on the score sheet by Frydenlund’s 20 points. Jessica Buck had 16 while Megan Pold posted a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds. 

With the win the Vikings and Jimmies are now tied for first in the NSAA with 5-1 records. VCSU is now 17-7 overall. Jamestown falls to 18-6.

Men: Jamestown 87 Valley City State 64

The NSAA leading Jimmies once again looked strong against the Vikings. Jamestown shot an impressive 46% from the field while knocking down 50 percent of their three pointers. The Vikings struggled to score hitting just 37 percent from the field. 

Brequan Tucker posted a team high 17 points for the Jimmies. Three other Jimmies finished in double digits: Taylor Newton posted 14, Jake Hagler and Sam Johnson each had 12 points, and Cedric Smith scored a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Mac Kroeplin knocked down three tray’s for the Vikings scoring a team high 17 points. Ellwood Ellenson just missed a double-double with 13 points and seven rebounds. 

The Jimmies are now 17-6 overall and stand tied with Dakota State at 5-1 for first in the conference. Valley City State falls to 1-5 in the league and is 11-14 overall. 

The Vikings travel to Dickinson State on Wednesday for their second meeting with the Bluehawks. The Jimmies return home on Wednesday when they host Presentation College. You can hear the Vikings games starting at 6:30pm on 1490 KOVC. The Jimmies games can be heard on ESPN AM 1400 starting at 5:30pm.
