Leroy Karlstad was born August 18, 1924 to Lars and Clara (Johnson) Karlstad of rural Hatton, ND.  He attended Beaver Creek country school near Hatton and graduated from Hatton High School in 1942.

He married Shirley Baptist in 1956.  The couple had two sons.

In 1959, Carsten began farming near Hatton.  On June 23, 1966, he married Guida Porter Zwick in Aberdeen, SD.  They resided on the farm for 22 years, and in 1988, Valley City, ND became their new home.  Together, they enjoyed traveling to many places, here and abroad.  Guida passed away January 9, 2005.

Carsten especially enjoyed spending time at Lake Ashtabula, fishing, gardening and visiting with family and friends.  He also enjoyed keeping up with sporting events, locally and on TV.  His 90th birthday last August was shared with many friends and family at Hatton and was a special time for him.

He is survived by his two sons, Robert (Gail) Karlstad of Holden, MA and Russell (Joan) Karlstad of Worcester, MA; a granddaughter, Sara Karlstad; step-sons, Dwight Zwick of Centennial, CO, Grant Zwick of Valley City, ND, and Kent (Cecelia) Zwick, of Nine Mile Falls, WA; 8 step grandchildren; sisters, Mardell Ostenson of West Fargo, ND and Delores Hanson of Hatton; a sister-in-law, Avis Karlstad; a dear friend, Bette Bata of Langdon, ND; and many nieces and nephews.

Carsten was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brother, Palmer Karlstad; and a sister, Adeline (Neyssen) Erickson.

The funeral service for Carsten Karlstad, 90, Valley City, ND will be held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Valley City.  Burial will be later in the spring at St. John’s Cemetery, Hatton, ND.  Carsten passed away peacefully at CHI Mercy Health in Valley City on Wednesday, January 21, 2014.

Visitation will be held at the church Tuesday from 12 PM until 2 PM.
