LAKE, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) Four halves and two overtime periods later, the Valley City Hi-Liners left Devils Lake with a 55-53 girls win and 83-80 boys loss in double overtime. 

Girls: Valley City 55 Devils Lake 53

The Valley City Hi-Liners trailed by as much as 13 points in the second half, but the Hi-Liners never say die spirit would lift them to a two point Eastern Dakota Conference win. 

After taking a four point lead on the back of a pair of baskets from Rebekah Peterson, the Hi-Liners would watch their lead turn back into a tie when a bench technical foul led to four straight free throw going in for the Firebirds. On the ensuing inbound, Devils Lake’s Emily Shafer would score on a lay up putting the Hi-Liners back in the hole. 

The deficit wouldn’t last long as Charlotte Hushka went right back down the court tying the game up once gain at 53. Valley would score their final two points with just under 30 seconds to play before holding off the home team on their final drive. 

Hi-Liners were led on the score sheet by Clarissa Olson and Brenna Dieterle’s 15 points. 

Emily Shafer had a game high 18 points for the Firebirds. 

The win advance Valley City to 5-6 on the season. The two point swing lifts the Hi-Liners to 4-6 in the EDC. 

Boys: Valley City 80  Devils Lake 83 2OT

Trailing by three points with time expiring,  Valley freshman Hunter Burchill looked like anything but as he teed up a shot from the point and sent the game into overtime with a gigantic three pointer. 

Not to be out done, in overtime Devils Lake’s Zach Daheln hit a lay up at the buzzer to send the game into a second overtime. It was there that the the Firebirds would take what appeared to be a deceive six point advantage. That is until Levi Nix hit an NBA range three pointer bringing the Hi-Liners within just one basket of forcing a third OT. On the ensuing inbound, the Firebirds’ Joe Charboneau was called for a double dribble with just 10 seconds renaming. With one more chance, the Hi-Liners would inbound the ball to Nix who once again lofted the ball towards the rim just to see it bounce off the right side as the buzzer sounded.

Despite fouling out in the second overtime, Valley City’s Nate Rodriguez led all scorers in the game with a dominating 36 point performance.

Devils Lake’s Zach Dahlen tallied 28 for the home team in the extended game.

Valley falls to 2-8 on the year with a 1-8 record in the EDC.

The Hi-Liners girls and boys return to the road on Friday when they meet up with Fargo North. Play starts at 5:30pm with the girls game on 1490 KOVC.
