(NewsDakota.com) – Tuesday night in Bismarck we saw two completely different finishes to games that were very similar. Unfortunately for Jamestown those finishes went the way of Bismarck St. Mary’s. The Saint girls won a 66-64 decision while their boys stormed back for a 56-52 win.
Jamestown trailed in the girls game for most of the second half after a see-saw first 18 minutes. The Jays pulled within five points late but every bounce of the ball seemed to go St. Mary’s and the Saints persevered for a two point victory.
St. Mary’s wasn’t making their free throws down the stretch but Jamestown couldn’t buy a rebound. Bailey Lamp added a last second three to add to her team-high 15. Emily Reiten (13) and Taylor Schmiechel (10) both finished in double-figures.
The Jamestown boys locked in a 46-46 tie with just a few minutes remaining came up with two big plays to push their lead to six. First, Tanner Lunzman buried a three and on the ensuing inbound Noah Wanzek stole it, scored and was fouled. The lead was suddenly six and Jamestown appeared to be in control.
St. Mary’s scored the next four points from the free throw line and took the lead on a Thomas Barry and-one. The Saints finished it off with three free throws in the final seconds to lock it up.
Nick Fuchs lead the way with 14 returning after missing last Tuesday against Century. Jamestown played the final minutes without Fuchs, Wanzek or Scott Nelson, three starters who all fouled out.
