Kohn, age 78, of Valley City, ND entered Heaven on Dec. 12th at his home in Valley City with his family surrounding him. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 PM Wednesday December 17, 2014 at Epworth United Methodist Church in Valley City with Rev. Jolene Knudson-Hanse officiating. Visitation will be from 5PM until 7PM Tuesday at Epworth Church with a Prayer Service beginning at 7 PM.
Fritz was born Oct. 3, 1936 in East Prussia, Germany the son of Karl and Gertrud (Wiedner) Kohn. He arrived in the United States at the age of 18 and traveled by train to Chicago where on Dec. 24th, Christmas Eve, the family spent 9 hours waiting for the next train headed for Valley City. On Nov. 26th, 1958 he married the love of his life, Diane Olsberg. The couple made their home at Valley City where Fritz worked for the Peavey Elevator Co and later I.V. Severson Electric before joining Grotberg Electric. Fritz worked and was a part owner at Grotberg Electric for 42 years. He retired in 2000 but continued to work for the Bobcat Company on a part-time basis.
Fritz was very active. He loved to golf and bowl. He was a volunteer fireman for 30 years and was a lifetime member of the VC Eagles and served in many offices including President in 1972-1973. He served as a director and President of the North Dakota Winter Show and was one of the founders of the High Soaring Eagle Ranch and the Head Injury Assn. He was a board member of the ND Electrical Contractors Assn. and a member of Faith Lutheran Church. He will be greatly missed by many friends and family.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife of 56 years, Diane, and 4 children: Kari (Don) Jones, Fargo, ND, Kyle, Kelly, and Kirk Kohn all of Valley City, ND; seven grandchildren: Heather Jones, Kandiyohi, MN, Sarah Olstad, Anthony Olstad, Brett, Braedan, Hailey, and Ali Kohn all of Valley City, ND; 2 great grandchildren: Aubree Jo and Addilyn LuxDiane; a brother Kurt (Joyce) Kohn, Hastings, MN; a sister Giesela (Al) Cruchet, Hankinson, ND; 3 nephews; and 2 nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Gerhard Kohn, a nephew, and a grandchild.
The family requests that any memorials in Fritz’s honor be sent to the Hi-Soaring Eagles Ranch of Valley City, ND or to any charity or their choice.
