ND (NewsDakota.com) Both the Cardinals girls basketball and wrestling teams traveled to Velva last weekend for High School sports action. On Friday night, the Carrrington girls basketball team defeated the Velva Aggies 65-33. On Saturday,the Carrington wrestling team took home the Velva Wrestling Tournament Championship with 275 points. Carrington girls are now 2-0 and Velva drops to 0-2. The wrestlers are 1-0 in regular season duals and the Velva Tourney Champs.

The Cardinals had three players in double figures including Maara Nelson with 16 points, followed by Bailey Retzlaff and Lynzee Hagemeister both with 10. The Cardinals outscore the Aggies 30-9 in the second half to get their second victory of the year. The Cardinals shot 50% from the field but only 39% from the free throw line. Chania Scherr had the only three-pointer in the game for Carrington and Haley Hewitt had four assists as well.
CARRINGTON RESULTS IN THE VELVA WRESTLING TOURNEY:
Carrington had eight champions and six runner-ups out of the total 17 weight classes and sub-classes on Saturday. They scored a total of 275 points to take the Championship, the next closest team was Minot Bishop Ryan with 189. Third place went to Rugby with 142, fourth place was Des Lacs-Burlington with 130 and rounding out the top five was Watford City with 108 1/2. A total of 17 teams participated in the tourney in two different gymnasiums. Here are the Carrington individual results:

Next up for the girls basketball team will be the 2014 Stutsman County Girls Basketball Tourney at the Jamestown Civic Center, starting this Thursday at 3pm on TED FM 98.3/102.7 and newsdakota.com. Carrington is the number one seed and will face the number four seeded Warwick.
