N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The North Dakota Department of Transportation has announced that law enforcement agencies across the state are adding extra shifts during the month of December.

“Our deputies, along with police officers and highway patrol troopers across the state, will be taking time away from their families and holiday celebrations because they know it’s an important job to keep our roads safe,” said Ward County Sheriff Steve Kukowski. Ward County’s Sheriff Department is one of 54 agencies participating in the extra enforcement.

DUI’s of drugs or alcohol continue to be a big problem and costs many lives. DUI arrests in the state accounted for over 25% of all adult arrests in North Dakota in 2013. For the fifth year, December has been designated as the National Impaired Driving Prevention Month. Overtime shifts are funded by the NDDOT as part of an overall strategy to eliminate all crash deaths and injuries on North Dakota roadways.
