N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Final numbers are out on both proposals from the Edgeley Public School vote.
According to Superintendent Rick Diegel, two questions were posed to the public. Allowing the board to sell up to $4.35 million dollars in bonds to help fund building a new gym, class room additions, remodeling, and security upgrades and raising the building fund levy from a maximum of 3 mills to 9 mills.
621 people voted on both questions. 408 voted no and 213 voted yes on question one. On the second question, 368 voted no and 253 voted yes.
“We just did not do a good enough job of educating the public to the need of both of those questions.” Diegel stated.
Roughly $2.7 million was to be used for a new gymnasium and there were some concerns with that. When asked about raising the building fund levy, Diegel stated that the maximum has been 3 mills since 1992. It generates roughly $30,000 a year for routine maintenance of the building. The average maximum building average mill in the state of North Dakota is 9.90 mills.
“Three mills does not generate enough money for us to continue to do maintenance and upgrades in the building. It’s not sufficient.” Diegel stated.
Rick also mentioned that the board will continue to gain public input, re-examine, and move forward from there.
