CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) As part of their Learning to Live/Living to Learn common course, the freshman class of Valley City State University will once again harvest squash for distribution by the Great Plains Food Bank.

The harvest will take place on a farm owned by Dan Faust a few miles outside Valley City on Thursday, September 25. Faust, a retired Lutheran pastor, grows the squash for the Great Plains Food Bank, part of Lutheran Social Services of North Dakota.

About 200 VCSU freshmen and their Learning to Live mentors will be bused to the farm Thursday morning, where they’ll work under the direction of volunteer crew leaders to pick squash and other vegetables for the Great Plains Food Bank, which will distribute the produce to North Dakota charitable food programs such as soup kitchens and community pantries.

This year’s harvest will be the fourth consecutive year for the event. Last year the VCSU students harvested more than 47,000 pounds of squash for the Great Plains Food Bank.
