CITY,N.D. (NewsDakota.com) The Valley City High School athletics were busy on the courts and fields this weekend hosting the Volleyball Optimist tournament, a  four team tennis tournament, and the Bill Jansen Blue/White Invite for cross country.

On the volleyball court, the Valley City Hi-Liners had their best showing ever in the Optimist Tournament claiming their first ever title.

The Hi-Liners biggest challenge came late in Saturday’s play as they were forced into a match deciding third set against Sargent Central. In the last game, the Hi-Liners pulled together to claim the victory 15-10 over the Cadets. In the Championship, the Hi-Liners would knock off Oakes in two straight games (25-16, 25-17) to claim the title.

Valley City’s Claire Olson was named to the Optimist Tournament Team.

While the Volleyball team was hard at work in town, the Cross Country team was on the outskirts at Bjornson Park hosting the Bill Jansen Blue/White Invite.

In the boys race Casey Engelhard was the top runner for Valley finishing at 17:58 in eighth place. The boys team finished 11th of 19 teams.

The girl’s team had a strong finish combining to take fifth place as a team. Mikaylah Ross had the top finish for the Hi-liners. She also grabbed 8th place with a time of 16:36.

 On the tennis court, Valley City hosted Fargo Davies, Bismarck Century and Bismarck Legacy for 3-2 line up duels. The Hi-Liners would play two matches falling in both to Century and Legacy by scores of 4-1.

The doubles team of Riley Miller and Hunter Burchill picked up the only wins for Valley City in both matches. The Hi-Liners duo picked up the victories over Century’s Bryce Everson and Mason Pitcher 6-2, 6-2 and Legacy’s Joe Wegner and Robert Modin 6-1, 6-2.

 Valley City Tennis returns to the courts on Monday when they host Wahpeton, the Cross country team is in Casslenton on Thursday, and the Volleyball team returns to the court this Tuesday night in West Fargo.
