S.D. (NewsDakota.com) In their first North Star Athletic Association game of the year, Valley City State football worked over Dakota State for a 34-14 victory.

The win advances Valley to 2-1 overall with a mark of 1-0 in the conference.

The Vikings scored on the opening drive using a combination of passing and running that ended 78 yards from their starting point when Ian Keller rushed in the end zone from two yards out.

After forcing the Trojans offense off the field with a three and out  VCSU would score on their second drive of the game.  This time the Vikings needed just two plays to score.  On the second play from scrimmage Kurtis Walls found Zach Johnson on a 79 yard pass to give VCSU a 14-0 lead.

The Trojans would pull to within seven at the end of the half, but that was as close as the Trojans would get.

In the second half the Vikings put their foot on the gas pedal and pulled away, out scoring DSU 17-0 in the last two quarters.

Walls led the game in passing with with 428 yards and 2 touchdowns.  He was 20 of 30 with one interception. 

His favorite target in the game was Demondre Boler. The California native finished the game with 165 yards receiving and one touchdown. 

The Vikings defense was tenacious, getting to Dakota State’s quarter, Justin Summers for 8 sacks in the game.  Sam Cooke led the team with three. 

VCSU’s running game caught new life against the Trojans.  Trevor Goerts and Ian Keller combined 141 yards and two touchdowns. Dakota States, Jeremy Christner led runners with 149 yards and a touchdown.

Vikings return to NSAA play next week on the road at Dickinson State.  That game will air on 1490 KOVC at 2:30pm.
