L. Coit was born January 12, 1935 in Wahpeton, ND to parents Neal B. Coit and Mabel Anderson Coit. He was raised in Hanson Township of Ransom County and graduated from Lisbon High School in 1953. Bill attended a two year animal science program at NDSU before marrying Clarice Rasmusson on November 5, 1955 at Standing Rock Church in Fort Ransom, ND.
In 1968, William and his wife Clarice and five sons left their first home in Milwaukee, WI to return to the Coit family homestead in Englevale, ND at which time he began dairy farming in partnership with his father and uncle Roger Coit. William was very active in his church and community. He was a Ransom County Fair Board member, a Land O’Lakes regional and state board member, a 4-H leader and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church council member. After retiring from farming in 2000, Bill enjoyed many years serving as a bus driver for kids with special needs for the Lisbon Public School District.
Surviving Bill is his wife Clarice Joyce Coit, LaMoure, ND; his five sons: Rory (Crystalie), Deerwood, MN; Neal (Claudia), St. Cloud, MN; Rich (Nancy), Pierre, SD; Jeff (Lisa), Sioux Falls, MN; and Bill, Eagan, MN; and one daughter: Valerie (Mike Scholtz), Duluth, MN; nine granddaughters; one grandson; five great-grandkids; one brother Robert, Sandborn, ND; and numerous nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his parents Mabel and Neal B. Coit.
Bill passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 10 at the St. Rose Care Center in LaMoure surrounded by family. He will be greatly missed for his gentle and kind spirit, love of the outdoors, playful sense of humor, affinity for animals, enthusiasm for travel and meeting new people and his enduring commitment to farming and his family. He was an optimistic man and instilled in his family an optimistic view of life.
On Sunday, September 14 a visitation will take place at the Dahlstrom Funeral Home in LaMoure at 3:00 pm followed by a prayer service at 5:00 pm. A celebration of Bill’s life will be held at 11:00 am at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Verona, ND followed by a light lunch. Interment will take place at 3:00 pm at Oakwood cemetery in Lisbon, ND.
