N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Fred Rykman, invasive species coordinator for the North Dakota Game & Fish Department says it appears silver carp are now established in the James River in the Jamestown area.

The leaping fish, first detected three years ago in the Lamoure area, migrating from South Dakota after record flooding, appear to be surviving and thriving. He says Game & Fish has just caught several carp weighing up to ten pounds.

He says a female carp was ready to spawn but its not yet clear if smaller fish could survive North Dakota winters. Silver carp are considered a threat to native fish and other marine life because they attack the food chase.
