CITY, N.D (NewsDakota.com) Valley City Legion Post 60 fell to Devils Lake 4-0 in league play Thursday night at Charlie Brown Field.

Post 60’s pitcher, Chase Carpenter, started the day strong striking out the side through the first two innings. However, in the fourth Devils Lake would get to him for the first hit of the game. It would prove to be costly as Devils Lake would later score the opening run on two Valley throwing errors. Despite only giving up two more hits, Devils Lake would clinch the victory with a big three run seventh inning.

Carpenter also led Post 60 at the plate going 2 for 4 on the day. Casey Englhardt, Jakob Miller, Austin Meyer, and Dalton Ondracek each registered a hit.

Devils Lake would go on to win the non-district match up 12-3.

Over in Lisbon, the Valley City Babe Ruth team took home a pair of 12-9 and 6-3 wins. Valley now stands 4-0 in district play with a 8-2 overall record.

In the district game Lisbon held a late lead, but behind of the play of Nate Rodriguez who finished the game a perfect 4 for 4 at the plate with a double, triple, two RBIs and two runs, Valley would come back to force the game into extras.  In the ninth, Valley would capture the win with a 3 run inning that Lisbon had no answer for.

Rodrigez earned the win on the mound pitching the final three innings and allwing just one hit while fanning seven batters. Drew jacobson started on the hill, and kept Valley with in reach of Lisbon all night allowing just seven hits and striking out four batters.

Head Coach Lance Lukes while happy with the outcome knows his team has more saying, “We didn’t come out playing our best. We were just kind of going through the motions and not putting anything really into it.  We left to many runners on base and didn’t execute some of the little things that we need to be doing”

Valley would respond with a strong second game taking the lead from the get go and never giving it up in a three inning win.

Tanner Thomsen threw a complete game for VC allowing three runs on three hits and striking out four batters.  At the plate, Andrew King and Jade Oestern led the way picking up a double and RBI each.

This Weekend Valley City host the likes of Jamestown, Carrington, Gwinner, Lidgerwood and New Rockford in the Fifth Annual Pizza Corner Classic. Pool play begins at 9:00am on Saturday. Valley takes the field at 5:30pm against Lidgerwood. Tournament play will take place Sunday starting at 10:30am.
