Roy Martin, born January 9th, 1949, passed away unexpectedly June 3, 2014, at his home in Valley City, ND.

Roy and Lillian Martin raised their son Douglas and his two little sisters Janis and Angie in the Frogtown neighborhood of Valley City.

Douglas married Kathleen Hochhalter, November 1, 1969. They moved to San Diego, CA where Douglas started his six year Navy career as a nuclear reactor operator on the fast attack submarine, the USS Plunger. He got to see many ports around the world.

Douglas was discharged and returned to Valley City in 1975. With the help of family and friends he built a home in Frogtown on the river. A Frogtown native, he had the foresight to build a foundation worthy of the Sheyenne River for 35 years; it has remained dry through all the floods. It was a fun house in the neighborhood because Doug built everything from sailboats to airplane wings in the unfinished living room with his kids and their friends.

He joined his father’s business, Baldhill Electric, as a master electrician. He also pursued a master’s degree in mathematics and teaching at NDSU, but was compelled to lead a life of adventure as a rural mail carrier for the Valley City branch of the US Postal Service.

Douglas was a very curious individual. He was a jack of all trades with more hobbies than time. He enjoyed computer programming, shooting, science fiction, baseball, medieval history, and theoretical physics just to name a few.

He was an accomplished pilot and could be seen flying his 1945 Aeronca Champ around the valley on summer days. He was smart, had a great sense of humor, a big heart, and loved to tell a good submarine story.

Douglas was preceded in death by his younger sister Janis (Stanley) Hansen and his parents Roy and Lillian (Swenson) Martin.

Douglas is survived by his wife Kathleen (Hochhalter) Martin, Valley City, ND; daughter Alyssa (Jason) Conitz, Wishek, ND; son Aaron Martin, Boonville, CA; sister Angie Martin, Valley City, ND; brother-in-law Stanley (Janis) Hansen, Valley City, ND; niece Stacie (Paul) Leier, Valley City, ND; niece Andrea Suhr, Valley City, ND; brother-in-law Rodney (Pamela) Hochhalter, Princeton, MN; niece Sasha (Joe) Wieczorek, North Branch, MN; and his much loved Labrador Einstein.

Services for Douglas Roy Martin will be held Tuesday, June 10, 2014, at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Valley City, ND. Visitation will be at 10:00 a.m. followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Lunch will be served. Graveside services will follow at Woodbine Cemetery.
