(NewsDakota.com) For the newest team in Class B Region I Baseball, the boys from Oakes High have started their run in this year’s regional tournament not playing like a traditional expansion team. The #3 seeded Tornadoes won both of their games on Saturday to put them in the winners bracket against the #1 seeded Vikings of Kindred/Richland.
The first game of the four played at Kindred saw the #4 seeded Jaguars of Northern Cass defeat the defending State Champions and #5 seeded Squirrels of Central Cass 4-3. Jaguars starting pitcher Taylor Kyllo struck out 12 batters and drove in the winning run with a single down the right field line in the bottom of the seventh.
In game two, the Tornadoes took down the #6 seeded Loboes of LaMoure-Litchvlle/Marion 7-0. The combination of Mike Kelly and Bryce Meehl allowed just three Loboe hits. Jon Tyre had four hits, an RBI and a scored a run.
The third game on the day saw the Vikings hold off Northern Cass 6-5. Northern Cass hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning to pull to within a single run, but the hometown Vikings, lead by Fletcher Andel’s 14 strikeouts held on for the win.
The final contest was a tremendous pitching duel between the Tornadoes and the #2 seeded Falcons of Maple Valley/Enderlin. Kaleb Sell drove in Ethan Zetocha and Grayson Roney in the top of the 10th inning to give Oakes a 2-0 win. Tyre went all 10 innings on the mound for the Tornadoes, allowing just three hits and striking out 10. Daniel Lingren was just as impressive, throwing a no-hitter through seven and two-thirds innings, but allowed the two runs on three hits in his 10 innings of work with three strikeouts.
Day two of the Region I Tournament is set for Monday. Loser-out play starts at 12:30 with LaMoure-Litchville/Marion and Northern Cass. Game two will feature Central Cass and Enderlin/Maple Valley. The third game has Oakes playing Kindred/Richland, and game four pits the first two winners against each other.
