CITY, N.D (NewsDakota.com) Defense was the name of the game in the Eastern Dakota Conference softball match up between the Valley City High School and Fargo North, but in the end it was the Hi-Liners who prevailed with a 4-1 win. VCHS would also go on to capture the non-conference game with the Spartans 13-3.
The conference game looked to be a pitching duel between North’s Claire Vangerud and Valley’s Danica Diegel. It wasn’t until the fourth inning that the first run of the game was scored by the Spartans, when Morgan Olson hit an RBI single that scored Madeline DeLeon with two outs. That would be the only run for the Spartans in the game.
The Hi-Liners would strike first blood in the sixth inning when Madison McDaniel reaching first on a Fargo North error. It would prove to be costly as McDaniel would later score on another Spartans error. Just two batters later, Broke Breckheimer would drive in the games winning run on a RBI single that scored Paula Andel. Danica Diegel would then help out her own cause by driving in two more insurance runs to end the frame.
Diegel would then go on to shut down the Spartans in the final two innings. The win advances Valley City to 6-3 in the EDC with a 15-6 regular season record.
In the non-conference game, the two teams would play a closer finale then the final score dictated. The Hi-Liners and Spartans stood deadlocked at three until Valley City exploded for a 10 run fourth innings. That would prove to the dagger that brought down the Spartans who had struggled to score runs all night. The Hi-liners defense would stand strong preventing North from scoring in the final two stanzas, and ending the game after five innings of play.
Valley City returns to the diamond on Thursday when they host Devils Lake at 4pm. That game can be heard on 1490 AM KOVC.
