CITY, N.D (NewsDakota.com) For the first time since 1990 the Valley City State Softball team can refer to themselves as conference champs.

The Vikings earned the regular season title with a 10-2 record in the North Star Athletic Association. The University of Jamestown also reached 10 wins this season but dropped four games to conference opponents. Both teams were scheduled to play NSAA games this week, but the rainy weather prevented the two squads from getting on the diamond.

In her first year as a head coach, Elle Fracker led the Vikigns to a 21-19 overall record. Fracker addressed the conference championship by saying, “Most of our players weren’t even alive, so they’re looking at the date as something that’s historic almost.”

Coach Fracker and the Vikings will look to carry the momentum from the regular season in to the North Star-Frontier Conference Tournament Friday morning (May 2) in Jamestown. Valley City enters play as the two seed. Dickinson State from the Frontier Conference holds the top spot. The Vikings will open the first round against Presentation College at 10:15am. In the Regular season, the Vikings swept the Saints in four games.
