LAKE, N.D (NewsDakota.com) The Valley City Hi-Liners softball team improved the Eastern Dakota Conference record on Monday night with a 5-4 win over Devils Lake in eight innings.
It was a tough game for Valley City who left 13 runners stranded on the base paths but they were still able to pull out the victory in extra inning. The Hi-Liners offense was sparked by Brooke Breckheimer who was 3-5 at the plate with a run scored.
A Majority Valley City’s scoring came in the third inning when Sadie Klingenberg drove in two runs with a single to right field. Later in the inning, the Hi-Liners sophomore short stop would come home to score on a passed ball.
Valley City’s winning run came in the eighth when, a fly ball was drooped by the Firebirds center fielder allowing Tarryn Justesen and Jessica Denholm score.
In the circle, Danica Diegel scattered five Firebirds hits and struck out 10 through seven innings. Heather Knutson closed the game out for the Hi-Liners allowing just one run on one hit in the final inning of play.
The win advances Valley City to 2-0 in the conference with a 7-1 regular season record. Their next test will be tonight (Tuesday, April 22) when the Hi-Liners travel to Fargo Davies for a match up with the Eagles at 4:30pm.
