N.D. (NewsDakota.com) To accommodate taxpayers who may have last-minute questions or need help with their state income tax returns, Tax Commissioner Ryan Rauschenberger says the Tax Department will be open on Monday, April 14, until 7:00 p.m. and on Tuesday, April 15, until 9:00 p.m.

Taxpayers may call 701.328.1247 with questions about filing their North Dakota State income tax return or, for help in person, may go to the State Tax Department’s office on the 16th floor in the Capitol Building.  The north door of the Capitol will be open until 7:00 p.m. on Monday and until 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday.  Those visiting the office for help need to bring a copy of their federal tax return along with copies of W-2’s and 1099 forms.

“It is important to file a complete and accurate return.  Anyone unable to do so by the April 15th due date, should file an application for an extension,” said Rauschenberger.  “Filing the federal IRS Form 4868 (Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File) with the IRS by April 15, 2014, gives taxpayers until October 15, 2014, to file their individual income tax returns. 

Taxpayers who obtain a federal extension automatically receive an extension to file their state return.  No additional application or form is required and no notice is required to the State Tax Department.  If a paper return is filed, a copy of Form 4868 must be attached to the state return.”            

Form 4868 is available on the IRS web site at www.irs.gov, or call 800.829.3676 to receive forms through the mail.  Please note that the IRS requires taxpayers who file for an extension to include payment of any anticipated taxes.
