N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – North Dakota’s ban on texting while driving will be getting a high-intensity workout this April.
Since the no texting while driving law went into effect, communities have not seen a major emphasis on law enforcement until now. Officers in Bismarck, Devils Lake, Dickinson, Fargo, Grand Forks, Jamestown and Minot will be participating in the increased effort.
All drivers suspected of texting will be pulled over. Using new tactics and increased patrols, officers will identify and stop drivers from using their mobile devices to text, email, or access the Internet. There will be a $100 penalty applied even if the driver is stopped at a stop sign or stoplight. Jamestown Police are planning to deploy up to three texting and driving enforcement teams during the increased effort.
North Dakota was one of only seven states to receive federal grant funding for texting and driving prevention. The campaign this April is the first statewide texting enforcement campaign for the North Dakota Department of Transportation. Officers are expected to log a substantial number of traffic stops for potential texting citations.
