CITY, N.D (NewsDakota.com) The Valley City Hi-Liner’s softball team opened up the season on a high note winning their first two games of the year 7-3 and 18-15 in in a double header with Bismarck High on Saturday.

In the opening game of the day, Valley City got outstanding pitching from Danica Diegel. The senior hurler earned the win going seven strong innings allowing just three runs in her first performance on the mound.

The Demons got out to the early lead in the game scoring the first three batters that steeped to the plate. However, Diegel made sure no more runs would cross the plate in the first striking out the final three hitters of the inning.

In the second, the Hi-Liners tied the game up when Brenna Dieterle scored on a Diegel single to left field. Brooke Breckheimer would prove to be the winning run when she crossed home in the fallowing inning. Before the game concluded the Hi-Liner’s offense would add three more insurance runs.

Valley City 18 vs Bismarck High 15

The second game was an offensive display with both teams reaching double digits on the scoreboard. The Hi-Liners took the early 5-1 lead through the first two and a half innings, but in the bottom of the third the Demons bats came alive for eight runs.

The Hi-Liners would trail until the final inning when Diegel started Valley City off with one out triple. On the next at bat Dierra Diegel would score her sister. By the time the inning had come to a close, the Hi-Liners had put up six runs to reclaim the lead. In the bottom half of the inning, the Demons would only be able to muster one run allowing the Hi-Liners to complete the comeback victory.
