James McAllister, age 87 of Valley City, ND (formerly of Oriska), died March 16, 2014 at Mercy Hospital of Valley City.
Earl was born January 22, 1927 in rural Barnes County, the son of Charles and Elizabeth McAllister.
He grew up in Barnes County and attended country school and graduated from St. Catherine’s High School in 1944.
He served in the Army from 1946 to 1947. Earl was united in marriage to Violet Reberg on September 19, 1949 at St. Catherine’s Church. He drove flour truck for Russell Milling Flour Mill until 1954 when they moved to Oriska, where he farmed until 1999. They later moved to Valley City.
He served on the Oriska School Board, Farmer’s Union Board, St. Bernard’s Parish Council and Cemetery for many years. He was a loving father who was proud of his kids, grandkids and great grandkids. He loved working in his woodworking shop and spent countless hours making toys for his grandchildren. He loved attending all sporting events of his children and grandchildren. Earl was an avid Twins fan. He was a man of faith who taught by example.
Earl is survived by his wife of 64 years, Violet, six children, Jim (Bev) of Sanborn, Bob (Carol) of Valley City, Debbie (Joel) Peterson of Fargo, Connie (Larry) Ochsner of Glyndon, MN, Lori (Pete) Paulson of Valley City and Rick (Wendy) of Devils Lake, his sister, Betty Ohm, of Mandan, 14 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren, with another one expected soon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and a granddaughter.
The family requests donations be made to the St. Bernard’s Cemetery, or your favorite charity, in lieu of flowers.
Visitation: Thursday, March 20, 2014 from 4 PM to 7 PM at St. Bernard Catholic Church, Oriska, ND with a Prayer Service beginning at 7 PM
Funeral Mass: Friday, March 21, 2014 at 10:30 AM at St. Bernard Catholic Church, Oriska, ND
Burial will be in the spring at St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery.
