Wife, Mother, Teacher, Friend, Woman of Faith and Compassion, Solveig Helene Nelson was born May 12, 1924 to Petra (Lillevand) and Bjorn Granlund in Fort Ransom, ND. She attended school in Ft. Ransom and graduated in 1941. After receiving her teaching degree in 1943 from Valley City State Teachers College, she taught at Svea rural school and in Oakes, ND.  She wanted adventure and went west teaching at Dickinson Public School where she met lifelong friends Phyllis Knutson and Inga Kelner.

She married Marvin Nelson of Kathryn, the love of her life, in 1950. She was baptized, confirmed, and married by Pastor Sandanger of Fort Ransom. Solveig and Marvin began their life together on the original Nelson family farm where they raised their 4 children. She warmly embraced her children’s spouses and they loved her.

Solveig was a devoted church member who served as Superintendent and teacher of Sunday School, Luther League leader and active member of WELCA. She loved the camaraderie of quilting together.

Solveig taught Kindergarten for 19 years. She loved working with that age and put on memorable graduation programs each year. Solveig enjoyed her many travels, working in her flowerbeds, birds, crocuses and the moon. She loved being with family and friends, visiting and always making sure there was a cup of coffee.

Solveig and Marvin moved to Bridgeview Estates in Valley City in 2009. She passed away peacefully at the Sheyenne Care Center on March 13, 2014.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 63 years; son, Barry (Sue) Nelson of Fargo; daughters, Patty (Larry) Pederson of Valley City, Susie (Tim) Jorgenson of Watford City, and Mary Ann (Bill) Wieland of Aberdeen, SD; 10 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
