CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) The late Herman Stern will be the 40th recipient of the Theodore Roosevelt Rough Rider Award on March 13.
Grandson Rick Stern said his grandfather was 16 when he came to North Dakota from Germany in 1903 to work for his cousin Morris Straus in Casselton before becoming the store manager in Valley City. He says his grandfather achieved great things as a humble German immigrant.
Valley City resident Lee Isensee lost his father in a hunting accident when he was 12 year old. He said Herman Stern hired him and watched over him like a father.
Isensee says a lot of people may not know that Herman Stern was able to save nearly 200 German Jewish immigrants who would have perished under the Nazi regime in the 1930’s.
The award will be presented to the family of Herman Stern during a luncheon Thursday at a Greater North Dakota Chamber meeting in Fargo. The organization was founded by Stern in 1924 to promote the state. A portrait of Herman Stern will hang in the North Dakota State Capitol building.
Stern also promoted the start of the North Dakota Winter Show and encouraged Robert Ingstad Senior to get a radio license for a station (KOVC) in Valley City.
