John Szarkowski, 93, of Jamestown, ND, passed away on March 7, 2014 at Ave Maria Village, Jamestown. John was born December 6, 1920, in Jamestown, the son of Richard and Wanda (Maluski) Szarkowski. He grew up in Fried, ND and attended school there. John graduated from St. John’s Academy, Jamestown, in 1939. He was inducted into the US Army on October 17, 1942 and served at Schofield Barracks, HI. He was honorably discharged on December 19, 1945 and returned to Jamestown where he married Virginia “Jean” Gaedtke on November 4, 1946 at St. James Catholic Church. John was a self-employed truck driver until he retired in 2007. He was a member of the St. James Basilica, Knights of Columbus, American Legion, V.F.W., and the Eagles. John is survived by his two sons, Richard Szarkowski, Jamestown and William (Kathy) Szarkowski, Stayton, OR; two daughters, Jane Szarkowski, Clearwater, MN and Phoenix, AZ, and Linda (Dipak Adhikari) Szarkowski, Chicago, IL; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one brother, James (Yvonne) Szarkowski, Spiritwood Lake, ND. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; one son, Thomas; and two brothers, Robert and Edward.

     Eucharist of Christian Burial: 10:00 a.m., Monday, March 10, 2014 at St. James Basilica, Jamestown, with Father Sean Mulligan officiating. Visitation: None scheduled. Arrangements are in the care of Williams-Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown. Interment: Calvary Cemetery, Jamestown.
