(NewsDakota.com)- McKayla Orr seems to not want her final high school basketball season to end as she played one of her most complete games of the year to help Jamestown past Mandan, 56-46, in the WDA opening round.
Orr had 21 points, but more impressive was the shutout she pitched on defense. Mandan’s McKayla Howling Wolf got to know Orr very well, as Orr tracked the Braves senior all over the floor. Orr held Howling Wolf to no points and just five shots.
Jamestown crawled out of the gates missing nine of their first 10 shots and turning the ball over six times in four minutes, before they righted the ship. Thanks to their own brand of suffocating defensive lead by the Orr sisters, the slow start didn’t hinder the Jays. Jamestown lead 26-22 into halftime.
Paige Peterson was held in check for the most part, scoring 13 points and pulling down six rebounds. The WDA’s leading scorer and rebounder saw two to three black jerseys as soon as she touched the ball. The Jays will now play Bismarck High for a third time after two hard fought games in the regular season. Just two weeks ago, Jamestown lost 60-55 in Bismarck. Tip-off is 2pm.
The boys were run off the floor by the St. Mary’s Saints, 87-41. This game was never really close, other than a 9-9 tie Jamestown never threatened. Dan Neff, who came in averaging 5.6ppg, scored 23 as his height was unmatched inside. Ben Weisbeck added 21 and Darius Sparks hit for 18.
Jamestown will play Dickinson in a rubber-match and loser-out game tomorrow at 2:45pm.
If you read this closely, you see that the boys game and the girls game overlap times. The girls game will be broadcast on 1400/97.1 KQDJ, while the boys will air on 98.3 KXGT. Both games streamed online at NewsDakota.com.
