N.D. (AP) – Valley City State University President Steven Shirley is the new president at Minot State University.

The state Board of Higher Education voted unanimously to appoint Shirley as the next leader at Minot State. Shirley has served in higher education for 17 years. Shirley will be the 9th president of Minot State. He says the challenge at Minot State will be different than what he faced at Valley City State.

The Board will now negotiate Shirley’s salary and compensation package as well as a starting date. He replaces David Fuller, who is retiring in June.

Shirley began serving as president of Valley City State University July 1, 2008. Prior to that he served as vice president for student affairs at Dakota State University in Madison, South Dakota and as business professor and director of learning abroad at the University of Minnesota, Crookston.

A native of Fargo, Shirley earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration and doctorate in higher education at the University of North Dakota.

The State Board of Higher Education will direct the search for Shirley’s successor at VCSU.
