N.D (NewsDakota.com) The Valley City girls edged closer to home court advantage in the opening round of the Eastern Dakota Conference with a 61-46 win on the road at Wahpeton High School.

The win advances the Hi-Liner girls to 13-5 on the year with a 10-7 EDC record. The Huskies fall 6-12 on the season with a conference record of 5-12.

In the first half the Huskies took control of the game with a strong zone defense that forced the Hi-Liners to take a number of shots from behind the arc that would not seem to fall. When the halftime buzzer sounded the Hi-Liners trailed the Huskies 23-19.

When Valley City came out for the second half they forced their way to the basket and found the holes in the Huskies defense. Led by Dierra Diegel, who scored 16 of her team high 22 points in the second half, the Hi-Liners would take the lead back from the Huskies with just over 11 minutes to play.

Valley City’s stubborn defense would hold off the Huskies for the Hi-Liners to claim the EDC win.

Along with Dierra Diegel, Jessica Denholm had 14 points in the game, Brenna Dieterle had an impressive night for the Hi-Liners with six points and six rebounds, and Danica Diegel pulled down 9 rebounds in the game.

In other EDC play, Fargo Davies defeated Fargo North 90-54. The Hi-Liners win and the Spartans loss lifts Valley City into fourth place just past Fargo North in the conference. If the standings stay the same after the last night of the season, on Thursday, February 27th, Valley City would host the five seed in the first round of the Eastern Dakota Conference Tournament.

The Valley City boys team spent the night at the Hi-Liner Activity Center where they hosted 5th ranked Wahpeton. The Huskies would work past the Hi-Liners for a 71-35 win.

The loss drops Valley City to 2-13 overall on the year with an EDC record of 2-13. The win advances the Huskies to 13-4 in the conference with a 14-4 overall record.

The boys and girls team will wrap up the regular season on Thursday night when they host Fargo South. The event will be a double header with the boys to play first and the girls to follow. You can hear both games on 1490 KOVC.
