(NewsDakota.com) The Oakes High School boys basketball team started the 2013-14 season with an 0-7 mark.
They’re now one game away from playing for a Class B Region I title after defeating the District 2 Champions from Kindred High School 61-60 on Monday night.
Kindred, who had a six game winning streak coming into the game only trailed in the first half for less than a minute. The Vikings were able to establish the lead throughout the third quarter as well, taking a seven point lead to the final eight minutes.
The last quarter of regulation had plenty of twist and turns for both teams. Kindred coughed up the ball five times within the first two minutes thanks to the Tornadoes bringing a defensive press. The study defense gave Oakes a 19-3 run, and eventually a nine point lead with a little more than three minutes remaining.
The District 2 champs would put together their own rally, with their own 10-0 run to give them a 60-59 lead with just over a minute to go. Oakes’ Brody Bartholomew rolled in a jumper from just above the free-throw line with about eight seconds to go, and it proved to be the winning bucket to send Oakes onto Tuesday play.
Bartholmew finished with 13 points, Bryce Meehl had a team high 15, and Stephen Quant added another 11 for the victorious Tornadoes. Oakes (11-12) now faces the Enderlin Eagles in the second of two semi-finals set for Tuesday; the first being Milnor and Fargo Oak Grove. The Tornadoes faced Enderlin on February 5, and fell by 20 points without Ethan Zetocha in the lineup due to illness.
