(NewsDakota.com)- Day 1 of the Region III boy’s basketball tournament pretty much went as expected, other than the fact that last years champion LaMoure-Litchville-Marion was bounced in the first game. Three District 6 teams advanced; South Border, Strasburg-Zeeland, and Linton-HMB.
South Border 63, LaMoure-LM 58
After being down by as many as 18 at one point in the game, South Border comes storming back in the fourth quarter scoring 26 points compared to 10 from the number one seeded Loboes and will advance into Tuesday’s semi-final round. The Mustangs were led by Matt Kretschmar with 24 points including six 3-pointers. Hunter Pinke added 21 for the Mustangs. LaMoure/Litchville-Marion was led by Anthony Olson with 22 points and 14 rebounds. The Loboes shot 21/70 from the field for 29%, the Mustangs were 42% from the field, 23/54. LLM ends their season at 15-7, South Border improves to 14-9.
Strasburg-Zeeland 57, Medina-PB 44
The Clippers of Strasburg-Zeeland were led by two players in double figures, Nic Kramer had 24 points and Brody Niewsma had a double double with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Cole Diede led the Thunder with 12 points. Medina/Pingree-Buchanon ends their season at 12-11, Strasburg/Zeeland improves to 14-8.
Linton-HMB 56, Edgeley-Kulm-Montpeiler 45
The Rebels gave the top-seed everything they could handle, but in the end Linton-HMB was just too much as they pulled away. The Lions outscored EKM 19-8 in the final frame move onto the semifinals. Linton and EKM both were 10/25 from the field in the second half, but the Lions shot 11 more free throws and that turned out to be the difference.
Six players scored in double-figures with Linton’s Anthony Small’s 13 leading the way. Noah Greer’s 12 lead EKM.
Ellendale 60, Kidder County 46
Kidder County didn’t shoot the ball very well and scored just 11 points in the opening half and were behind 20-11. Ellendale scored the first bucket of the second half, but Kidder County responded on a 10-1 to close within two.
The Cardinals blew the game open from their with a 19-3 run to gain full control. The fourth quarter was a foul fest with each team scoring 24 points. Adam White dominated with 29 points making 17 free throws.
