CITY, IA (NewsDakota.com)- The Jimmie women have extended their winning streak to 11-games with a thrilling 67-66 victory over the Mustangs of Morningside College. The men couldn’t over come a 30-point effort from Morningside’s star Danny Rudeen and fell 91-82.
The fifth-ranked Jimmie women held on for dear life in the final seconds and were able to sneak by Morningside. Hannah Steele hit a step back three to give Jamestown a 67-64 lead, but were unable to hit their free throws to close out the game. The Mustangs had the ball and the final chance down just one, but Kalene Anderson couldn’t put away the final basket.
Jamestown lead by as many as 12 in the opening half, but the Mustangs stormed back to grab a nine-point lead.
She didn’t start for the first time this season, but the Jimmies got a huge boost from Morgan Mathison off the bench. The senior finished with 21. Coach Greg Ulland said after the game, “it might be the best game of her career, she was everywhere.”
Once again the Jamestown men stuck around for 40 minutes, but just couldn’t get over the hump and take the lead. Trailing 60-54 midway through the half the momentum was swinging to the Jimmies with four quick points and a steal. Unfortunately, Jamestown turned it right back over and Rudeen hit a back breaking three.
Morningside shot 47 free throws to the 19 that Jimmies shot. Brequan Tucker had 26 points to pace the Jimmies, while Mark Hoge chipped in with 19.
Both teams will play Briar Cliff tomorrow on New Years Eve at 5:30 for the women and 7:30 for men. Games will be broadcast on 1400 KQDJ and NewsDakota.com.
