N.D (NewsDakota.com): East met west at Jamestown High School on Saturday night, when the Valley City Hi-Liners made the trip to the Buffalo City for a girls/boys double header. It was a night in which both fans would get to cheer on their team to victory as the Valley City girls took game one 59-48, and in the boys match up it was the Blue Jays who came out on top 69-70 in the end.
Girls Game: Valley City Hi-Liners 59 vs Jamestown Blue Jays 48
Coming off their second win of the season, in which the Hi-Liners defeated St. Marys by 28 points, Valley City would continue to control the tempo of the game with strong defense.
In the first half, the Jamestown forwards found themselves in a dog fight, as the Hi-Liners allowed just six points from Addie Eamon in the opening period. While Eamon, fought for points, her teammate Paige Peterson found herself in early foul trouble drawing the attention of the referees on three occasions before the 10 minute mark. With Peterson on the bench, the Hi-Liners would take full advantage, as Danica and Dierra Digel would force their way to the hoop hitting shots and drawing fouls. In the end, the Diegel sisters would combine for 29 Hi-Liner points.
When the second half started, Paige Peterson was back on the court with new life. She would start the scoring off for the Blue Jays scoring on the first possession for the home team. She would prove to be hard to stop as the six-foot senior would go for 13 points in the paint in the final half. Despite the strong swing and pulling back to with in 10 points, the Blue Jays could not force their way back into the match.
While Dierra Digel led the Hi-Liners in scoring with 18 points, Jessica Denholm would be right behind her temmate with 17 in the match.
The Blue Jays were led on the score sheet by Peterson’s 13 points, Mikayla Orr would finish the night with seven before fouling out late in the game.
With the victory, the Hi-Liners now stand two games above 500 at 3-1. The Blue Jays drop to 1-3.
Boys Game: Jamestown 69 vs Valley City 57
In the second game of the double header, the boys from Jamestown and Valley City went back and forth through out much of the game.
After scoring 20 plus points in each of the first two games, Ian Schweitzer became public enemy number one for the Jays. The home team refused to let Schweitzer so much as call for a pass before doubling him up. It worked, the 6’5″ junior would go for just two points in the first half and would finish the game with just six on the night.
To make matters worse for the Hi-Liners, their big center was summoned to the bench after being called for three fouls just mid-way through the first half. With Schweitzer on the bench, Valley City would turn to Jared Lentz to help them gain an advantage over their opponent. While speedy forward would compile a game high 27 points, he could not lift Valley City to victory.
At the end of the first half, the Blue Jays would find themselves down by two points, but they would comeback.
Led by Nick Fuchs, who finished the night with a team high 14 points, the home team would rally to take control of the game late in the final period of play. Ashton Johnson was solid from behind the arc, finishing the night with 11 points. While the defense of Marc Wagner and Logan Anderson forced turnovers and a kept the Hi-Liners at bay.
The win advances Jamestown to 2-2 on the year, while Valley City falls 1-2 on in the early goings of the season.
