CITY, N.D (NewsDakota.com) The Valley City Vikings Men’s and Women’s basketball teams swept the  University of Minnesota Morris Friday night on the road.

Women: Valley City State 70 vs. University of Minnesota Morris 57

The women opened up play on the evening in solid fashion shooting 43% from the field in the first half. A majority of their points were scored with hardnosed play under the basket, as Valley City outscored the Cougars in the game, 40-22 in the paint.

In the second half, the Cougars would try to claw their way back pulling to within eight points with just over nine minutes to play. However, the  Vikings would have none of it. Led by Stephanie Pederson who scored 15 points in the game, the Vikings would pull away and claim a 70-57 win.  

Brittany Lehner tallied 12 points under the basket, while Courtney Dixon posted up for 10 in the contest.

Men: Valley city State 68 vs University of Minnesota Morris 67

In their closest game of the season the Vikings men’s team found a way to prevail as they escaped Morris, Minnesota with a one point victory over the Cougars.

The Vikings trailed by seven points going into the second half of play, but they would refuse to lie down. Mid-way through the second, Valley City would go on a 10 – 0 run tying the game a 52 apiece.  The two teams would trade leads throughout the last half, but the Vikings would grab a hold of it for the last time with just minutes left to play in the game.  The Cougars would threaten one last time but would come up short missing a free throw with just 45 seconds left on the clock.

Aaron Duske led the way to victory for the Vikings finishing the contest with a double double of 13 points and 11 rebounds. A.J. McDonald added another 18 points for the Valley City while Jeff Romeus came off the bench for 16 on the night.
