CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) It seemed inevitable, but the news was made official today by the American Football Coaches Association, Derek Elliott is an All-American.
The Valley City Native had an outstanding year in 2013, finishing the season second in the nation in rushing yards (1,873) and breaking 11 school records. Elliott becomes the first Viking to receive the honor since Chauncey Calhoun did it in 2008.
No Record was safe from Elliott this season as he eclipsed numbers held by some of the greatest players in Vikings history. A few of the school records that the senior running back surpassed included, single season rushing yards(1,873), Career Rushing yards (3,489), Career rushing touchdowns (36), single season rushing touchdowns (20), and single season total touchdowns (23). Some of the names that now stand behind Elliott in the record books are, Steve Battle, Calhoun, and John Overbey
Only two running backs in the nation make the All-American team, and Elliott seemed to be a shoe in this year averaging 187 rushing yards a game, and finding his way into the end zone 23 times.
At the end of the year, Elliott tied the record for rushing yards in a game, going for 286 on the ground against Mayville state. He capped the season off with 260 yard rushing game against Menlo College. Those two games lifted Elliott past Overbey as the all-time leading rusher in Valley City State History.
