CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) The President’s House Preservation Society will hold a holiday open house at the President’s House Guest Inn on the campus of Valley City State University Saturday from 2 to 5:30 p.m. The open house will feature refreshments, tours of the home and information about renovation plans.

The historic house, built in 1901, served as the residence for Valley City State presidents from 1918 until 1994. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Owned by Valley City State since 1921, the house has been preserved and managed by the President’s House Preservation Society. Now operated as the President’s House Guest Inn, visitors may rent any of the home’s four bedrooms or the entire house for overnight stays and special events.

The Historic President’s House is beautiful inside and out an addition and other upgrades are needed.

The state legislature appropriated $250,000 for the estimated $350,000 project during the 2013 session. The remaining funds will have to be raised separately according to VCSU president Dr. Steven Shirley.

The plan calls for an elevator from the garage level into the back side of the house. The proposal also looks to include an addition to the house, a new entrance, accessible restroom, library and a guest room.

Dr. Ludwig S. Platou built the President’s House in 1901. Teddy Roosevelt was an acquaintance of Platou and it’s believed that Roosevelt was a guest at the house.

The President’s House Preservation Society is a non-profit organization under the guidance of the VCSU Foundation Board. Any monetary gifts toward the preservation of the home are fully tax deductible.
