CITY, N.D (NewsDakota.com) The sunshine in California would not be as welcoming as hoped for the Valley City State University football team as the fell 38-28 in the last game of the season to Menlo College.

Derek Elliott followed up last week’s 286 yard performance against Mayville State, with a four touchdown 260 yard night against the Oaks. Despite the solid game from the senior running back, Valley City was held scoreless in the first half of the game. During that time, the home team scored four times creating a 24-0 lead at halftime.

The Vikings would open the second half with a 45 yard drive that ended on a ten yard touchdown run by Elliott. Two drives later Menlo would answer when their quarterback, Wade Hawkins, snuck by the Vikings defense and sprinted 52 yards to score.

As time was running down in the third quarter, the Vikings record books were once again re-written by the pen of Derek Elliott. Taking the ball 95 yards for a touchdown, the Valley City native surpassed John Overby as the Vikings all-time career rushing yards leader. When the game came to a close 3,489 yards would be the new high mark for VCSU rushing yards in a season.

Eliott would score two more times before the game came to an end, but an early fourth quarter touchdown by the Oaks, Kenneth Martey, would put the game out of the Vikings reach.

Valley City ends the season with a 5-5 regular season record. They share the North Star Athletic Association title with the University of Jamestown as both teams finished in the conference at 3-1.
