N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Unpaid lunch bills are starting to add up at The Jamestown Public Schools.
On Monday, The Jamestown Public School Board approved a limit on negative balances in student lunch accounts.
The new procedure is expected to start January 6th, 2014 and will enforce a limit of negative $15. That is roughly one week’s worth of meals. The discussion for the new limit started in the Summer, when the School Board approved using the district’s general fund to pay for about $9,942 in outstanding lunch bills from the 2012-2013 school year.
Right now, the school is facing a total of $4,840.27 in unpaid lunch bills for this school year. Amounts ranging from $15.15 to $445.50 per student have been reported.
After a unanimous vote, the new plan will not allow students to charge past the $15 limit. Once reached, parents have several different options including paying the debt in full, starting a payment plan with school food service or bringing lunch to school.
The limit is $15 per student and not per family.
