The funeral service for Norman Erber, 74, Oriska, ND will be 10:30 AM, Thursday, November 7, 2013 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Valley City, ND. Rev. Dan Faust will officiate and burial with military honors will be in Hillside Cemetery, Valley City. He died at his home under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley on November 3, 2013.
Visitation will be held in the Oliver-Nathan Funeral Chapel, Valley City on Wednesday from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM. A prayer service will be held there beginning at 7:00. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.
Norman Curtis Erber was born in Minot, ND on November 6, 1938, the son of Henry and Gladys (Loveland) Erber. He was raised on a farm near Glenburn, ND. He graduated from Concordia High School, Seward, NE in 1957. On October 3, 1962, he joined the US Army and was honorably discharged, September 3, 1964.
On October 10, 1965, he married Sharyl Doreen Whetter at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bottineau, ND. Norm worked for John Deere dealerships in Bottineau, Rugby, Rolla, and Valley City for over 30 years. He also managed the VFW club in Valley City for a short time and was also the auditor for the city of Oriska.
Norm began his catering career as a side job in the mid 1980’s. This eventually grew into a full time business, Norm’s BBQ. He cared about each of his customers and strove to meet their needs. He was well known as a “people person” and made friends everywhere he went. He retired in October 2011.
Working in his woodshop was one of his hobbies. He made keepsakes for all of his children and grandchildren. Camping with Sharyl at Clauson Springs was one of the things he enjoyed the most.
Norm held District and Post Commander positions within the American Legion as well as several other offices. He was a member of the Valley City Lions Club.
Norm is survived by his wife, Sharyl of Oriska; children, Randy S. (Lynn Frosch) Erber of Seattle, WA, Curtis N. (Joanna) Erber of Fargo, ND, Roger D. (Brenda) Erber of Muscatine, IA, and Rebecca E. (Boyd) Westman of Valley City; grandchildren, Elizabeth, Christian, and Jaden, Kevin and Nolan, and Kellen and Cambrie; brothers, Arnold (Jane) Erber of Glenburn, ND and Glenn (Lois) Erber of Jackson, MI; and a sister, Gladys (John) Eichelberg of Tucson, AZ.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Michael D. Erber; a brother, Hank Erber; and sisters and brothers-in-law, Inez and Roger Brown and Florence and Lytel Cook.
