CITY, N.D (NewsDakota.com) In the 112th meeting between Valley City State and the University of Jamestown, the Jimmies would claim victory defeating the Vikings 16-13 at Shelly Ellig field.

The loss drops the Vikings to 4-4 on the year with a 2-1 record in the North Star Athletic Association. The win is the Jimmies second in nine games, and they stand tied with the Vikings for the top spot in the conference with at 2-1.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Jimmies would be the first to score when Ryan Benke kicked a 32 yard field goal that bounced through the up rights after hitting the cross bar. The Jimmies wouldn’t be able to hold off the offensive attack of Derek Elliott who found his way into the end zone on a five yard touchdown run that capped off a six play 72 yard drive. The extra point by Cortez would be missed giving Valley City just a three point lead.

Jamestown would score once more before the end of the half when Beau Eriksson found Michael Sena on a 27 yard pass. The extra point from Benke would go wide as the lead changed hands going into halftime.

When the Vikings came out there was new life in the offense, after driving 56 yards down the field the drive would be capped off when Danny Hangaard  snuck to the back of the end zone pulling down a pass from freshmen quarterback Kurtis Walls. However, once more the Jimmies would answer this time with just over two minutes left on the clock, taking a 3 point lead as Sena and Eriksson hooked up for the second time in the game.

With time winding down the Vikings started their final drive on their own 33 yard line. Solid passing from Walls allowed the Vikings to get to the Jimmies 19 yard line. Facing a 4th and one, the Vikings opted to call time out and bring out the kicking team for a chance to send the game to overtime. On the last play of the game, Vikings Kicker Thomas Cortez put up a powerful kick that went just wide of the post.

As the clock reached zero, the Jamestown players rushed to the Vikings sideline to receive the Paint Bucket trophy at Shelly Ellig field. The win marks the 5th straight time that the road team has won the Battle for the Paint Bucket.

The Vikings return to play on November 9th when they host Mayville State in the final game of the NSAA. The Jimmies finish the regular season and conference play when they host Presentation College next weekend on November 2nd. That game can be heard on KQDJ.
