Frederick, SD-Funeral service for Edgar Luoma, 84, of Frederick will be 2:30 pm, Saturday, October 19, 2013 at Savo Lutheran Church, rural Frederick. The Rev. Galen Sylvester will officiate.
Visitation will be Friday from 4-7 pm with a prayer service at 7 pm at Carlsen Funeral Home.
Burial will be in Apostolic Lutheran Cemetery (North Savo), rural Frederick at a later date.
Edgar died Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.
Edgar, son of Andrew and Selma (Karjalainen) Luoma was born November 28, 1928 at Gackle, ND. When he was about one year old, his family moved to the farm where he would spend the rest of his life living.
Edgar was united in marriage to Helen Raisanen on March 11, 1950 in Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. Farming was a lifelong passion. He was a general farmer raising small grains, livestock and dairy. He witnessed the evolution of farming from horse drawn implements to tractors that steer themselves. Edgar loved to fish with Helen. They enjoyed fishing trips to Canada.
He was a member of Savo Lutheran Church. Edgar had served on several boards, including Elevator Board, Coop Board, and Frederick Community Store and served as Savo Township Treasurer for many years.
Edgar is survived by his wife, Helen; son, Kevin (Bernadette) Luoma of Watertown, SD; daughter, Leslie (Leonard) Sumption of Frederick; two brothers, Bernard Luoma of Oakes, ND and John (Mary Ann) Luoma of Aberdeen; sister, Lyla Butler of Marshfield, MO; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandsons and two great-granddaughters.
His parents, three brothers, Veikko, Wayne and Ervin and two sisters, Marie Kotila and Sivia Butler preceded him in death.
Casketbearers will be Joel Sumption, James Sumption, Blaine Luoma, Seth Luoma, Trent Luoma and Randy Wolter.
The organist will be Pat Dennert.
The family prefers memorials to the donor’s choice.
