CITY, N.D (NewsDakota.com) After dropping their second game this month, it is clear that October has been more a trick then a treat for the Valley City State Vikings.  

On Saturday afternoon, the Vikings lost their second game in a row by a score of 42-21 to NCAA Division III opponent, Gustavus Adolphus. The Gusties jumped out to an early lead scoring two quick touchdowns in the first quarter taking a 14-0 lead. Valley City would find the end zone for the first time in the second quarter, when Kurtis Walls found Derek Elliott on a 30-yard touchdown pass.

With just over three minutes to play in the half, it seemed that the Vikings would trail by just 7 going into the mid game break. However, Gustavus had other plans. The Gusties pushed down the field and topped off the first half of play with another seven points when Mitch Hendricks found Cole Engen on a 17-yard pass.

On the opening drive of the second half Gutavus would strike once again, when Hendricks found his third receiver of the night on a pass to Jake Douglas for a 22-yard touchdown pass.

Going into the fourth, VCSU found themselves down by 28 points. Elliott would score to bring the Vikings back to within 21 points, but the Gusties would answer again.

The Vikings would score one last time when Walls threw a strike to Colby Lum for a 30-yard touchdown pass, but the Vikings would not overcome the 21 point deficit.

The loss drops the Vikings to 4-3 on the year. They return to North Star Athletic Association play next week when they host the University of Jamestown in the Battle for the Paint Buckets at 1:00pm. You can hear the game on Dakota Country Radio starting a 12:30pm.
