Vernon Hansen, 77, of Oakes, ND, died peacefully October 13, 2013 at the Oakes Community Hospital with family by his side. He had a long and courageous battle with cancer, and never lost his optimistic attitude.
Harold Vernon, son of George and Clara (Low) Hansen was born on June 27, 1936 at Oakes, North Dakota. He attended school in Oakes, graduating from Oakes High School with the class of 1955. Vern farmed with his dad, was employed with the Soil Conservation District for fifteen years, and also helped area neighbors with farming until retiring in 1981.
Vern proudly served in the Army National Guard from 1953 until his discharge in 1962. He was an active Legion member for 29 years, serving as their Post Commander three times. He also served as the Firing Squad Commander and as the 10th District Commander and District Vice Commander. His interest was the color guard and recruiting members.
Vern enjoyed visiting shut-in friends and visiting with his coffee buddies at Clines Café, where he readily voiced his opinion. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and fur trapper. He had several out of state friends who would come every fall to hunt with him from as far away as West Virginia. He raised and registered Chester White Hogs and enjoyed showing them at the Red River Valley Fair and the North Dakota Winter Show. He was champion Hog Showman at Little I at NDSU while he was a short course student there.
