CITY, N.D (NewsDakota.com) On the muddy turf of Jerome Berg Field, Valley City State and Mayville State battled each other in a North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) running duel. The Vikings were led by running back Derek Elliott, while it was Dominick Bradley and Jerril Jenkins for the home team. When the final horn sounded, the Comets upset the 16th ranked Vikings on homecoming day at Mayville State in a 14-9 final.
Valley City was the first to get on the board when Thomas Cortez kicked a 20 yard field goal giving the visiting side the early lead. Mayville would not take long to answer as they marched down the field ending the first with a short touchdown run form Bradley.
The rest of the half would become a defensive stand off as neither side would get on the scoreboard again until the second half. The Vikings started the second half with the ball, and gave it to Elliott. The senior running back pushed, juked and dove his way down field giving the Vikings the one point lead on his 14th touchdown run of the season.
It would not go unanswered; Bradley would find his way into the end zone for his second time of the night giving the home team the lead.
With just two minutes left of the clock, Valley City would get the ball on their own side of the field, but the drive would come to an end when Vikings quarterback Kurtis Walls was intercepted by Rashad Flanders with just one minute and 30 seconds left on the clock.
The loss drops the Vikings to 4-2 overall with a 2-1 record in the NSAA. Mayville advances to 1-1 in the conference with a 3-3 record on the year. The two sides will meet again on Novomber 9th, at Shelly Ellig Field.
