CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) Members of the Valley City flood task force agree that a comprehensive flood protection plan for the entire city is still a work in progress.
Flood Task Force chairman Matt Pedersen says a majority of the buyout properties have been near Valley City State University. The future of Foss Music Hall is up in the air being it’s on the wrong side of the permanent flood protection plan.
Pedersen says a number of options are being discussed including building a new structure pending state approval and funding.
In other Flood Task Force news funding for nearly 18 flood buyout properties is between $1.5 to $1.8 million dollars according to Pedersen.
Soil borings, a river bank survey and floodway mapping are still being worked on in the preliminary design work. Earthen levees, concrete floodwalls and removable floodwalls were all under discussion during the Flood Task Force meeting held earlier this week.
Pending permit approval construction of permanent flood protection levees is tentatively set to begin in 2014 and continue through 2015 in Valley City according to the U-S Army Corps of Engineers.
