CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) On a rainy and windy day at Shelly Elllig field, the Vikings fought from behind to earn a 31-17 win over Presentation College.
The 18th ranked Vikings advanced to 4-1 on the season with the win, while the Presentation dropped 3-2 and still have yet to win a North Star Athletic Association.
For the first time this season, the Vikings offense was held scoreless in the first quarter of play. The Saints took full advantage of Valley City’s slow start when they gave the ball to running back Devin Mohn who scored on a four yard run. On the 85 yard drive, the freshmen back was responsible for 62 yards. The Saints would extend their lead to 10 with just under two minutes to play in the first quarter when Gavin Voss hit a 33 yard field goal.
In the second quarter with the wind at their back, the Vikings offense came to life. On their second drive, Valley city drove the ball to the Presentation eight yard line, but were unable to find the end zone. Instead, the Vikings would call on two time NSAA special teams player of the week ,Thomas Cortez, who booted the ball through the up rights to get Valley City on the board. After stopping the Saints and forcing the punt, the Vikings would tie the game on their next drive when Colby Lum was the recipient of a Jacob Millier fumble in the end zone. The score would stay tied going into the half
The wind and rain would once again slow the pace of the game, as the next score didn’t come till 10 minutes into the third. The Saints would be first on the board again as Mohn ran the ball in from the one yard line.
No team had scored when running up wind until the end of the quarter when Valley City’s Lum returned a 39 yard punt for a score, tying the game at 17.
The Vikings would take over the game after that point. Kurtis Walls would find newcomer Domondre Boler on a 59 yard pass for a score, then Derek Elliot would follow that up with 4 yard run with just two and a half minutes remaining.
The Vikings would seal victory when Fontayne Fuga intercepted a pass from Stephen Braswell at the Valley City eight yard line.
Next Saturday the Vikings make the trip northeast for a match up with the Mayville State Comets. Hear the game action on 1490 KOVC.
